Hello. Today, Earth Day 2012, I am starting this blog as a new forum to share information on holistic health and healing that I hope will be of value to many people. I am a holistic physician who graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Biology and attended the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where I also completed my residency in Family Practice. I also completed a four year postgraduate program at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy. I am a founding diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. I am director of the Pacific Center For Integral Health in Soquel, CA (near Santa Cruz), where I have practiced medicine since 1988. I have been voted “Best Holistic Healer” and “Best Doctor” in Santa Cruz county by the readers of Metro Santa Cruz (now called the Santa Cruz Weekly).
I was named “Top Family Physician in California” in 2012 by the website HealthTap and have won the “Top Holistic Medicine Practitioner in the US Award” in the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Competitions by HealthTap (HealthTap is a website where over 107,000 doctors volunteer to answer questions from people all over the world; the awards are based upon how much a doctor participates and votes by his or her fellow physicians).
My fellow physicians on HealthTap have also voted me as the top expert amongst them in the entire US on the topics of Lyme Disease, Supplements, Vitamin Deficiency, Vitamin D, Vitamin C. Herbal Supplements, Vegetarian Diet and 2nd in the US in Homeopathy.
I am also proud to say that the hundreds of thousands of patients who use HealthTap voted me “Most Loved Doctor” in the US in February of 2015.
I am known in some circles for having had the incredible privilege and challenge of being Jerry Garcia’s physician from 1990-1995, an experience for which I am very grateful.
I will be sharing information about health- how to treat and prevent illness and optimize health using a wide range of modalities from a holistic perspective. While western medicine is very useful for certain problems, it all too often leaves much to be desired, especially when dealing with chronic conditions. There are a wide range of alternative modalities such as nutrition, herbs and homeopathy which can be invaluable tools for healing and I plan to focus on these in this space.
I also have a website, http://www.drrandy.org which has many of my writings. I am currently unable to update that site due to technical difficulties, which is one of the motivations to create this blog, but I do welcome you to visit http://www.drrandy.org as it does have much useful information. I also have a public facebook page that you might find of interest: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Randy-Baker-MD/118815558232253
While I prefer to see patients in person, I am available for phone consultations for those who live at a distance. To schedule an in-person or phone consultation please contact my office at 831 476-1886.
Here is a concise overview of my approach to health and healing:
When I work with patients I focus on 3 main areas. The first is identifying the underlying causes of illness. These causes are many and varied, but basically all health problems are caused by the interplay of stress and our genetics. Stress includes both emotional stress and physiological stressors. Common physiological stressors include environmental toxins (heavy metals, molds, pesticides, PCB’s, dioxins, fire retardants, plasticizers etc.), microbes & electromagnetic fields.
While removing such stressors as much as possible is essential to health, it is also necessary to provide the body with optimal nutrition via diet & supplements. The tricky part is that one person may need 100 times more of a given nutrient than another person, so it is important to determine individual needs. Also, it is important to give nutrients that each individual can digest, absorb and transport to the parts of our bodies that need them.
Even if one removes stressors and provides optimal nutrition, people generally will not heal from chronic problems unless the energetic component of health is addressed. Our bodies are not just physical and chemical mechanisms but there is a flow of energy that moves throughout our bodies and in chronic health problems that energy flow is disrupted. Modalities that balance body energetics such as homeopathy, Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine and/or hands-on healing are usually essential parts of a comprehensive healing process. Within the realm of Energy Medicine I specialize in Classical Homeopathy, which is perhaps my favorite of all healing modalities. I have often seen homeopathy cure conditions considered incurable by conventional medicine.
When all of these aspects are addressed, even the most intractable and serious health problems can be healed (though it should also be noted that sometimes no matter what we do, some conditions will not be healed; I believe fate/karma is also a significant factor in our lives and health).
Welcome and Blessings!
